7 Things Every Traveller Should Know About Lisbon

19/09/2020 · TRAVEL · 0

Portugal is a wondrous place with many incredible things to do and see, but no visit to Portugal is complete without a trip to Lisbon. Lisbon has something for everyone, be it food markets or authentic Fado music. Read on for 7 things that every traveller should know about Lisbon to have the best time:

1.  Comfortable footwear is a must

This might seem like basic common sense, but it really is worth remembering as this is a city designed for lots of walking! Lisbon is a hilly place and the cobblestone streets can be murder on the feet. It can also be very slippery, windy, and sandy. Packing a reliable pair of sneakers will do you the world of good, or even a pair of walking sandals.

2.  Do not  forget to pay for public transport

Many people get away without paying for public transport. This can be met with huge fines, so make sure you go ahead and pay for your bus, train, and metro tickets in advance. It’s unethical not to pay for public transport and the police do undertake random checks, so be prepared to have your ticket ready to display.

3.  Make sure you view the city from above

Portugal is a beautiful city, and one of the best things about it is that you can view it from above. The panoramic views of Lisbon are magical and shouldn’t be missed. You’ll be able to see over Lisbon’s maze of streets, and there are some great look out points where you can relax after a long day of exploring.

4.  Eat at the Lisbon food markets

Restaurant road is a good place to go for some food, but there are so many Lisbon food markets that offer an incredible selection of food. The great news? Lisbon is one of the cheapest European sites to eat out in! Pastel de Nata pastry is a speciality and it has been around for 170 years, so make sure you give it a go.

4.  Ride the old tram

There are some seriously unique kinds of public transport in Lisbon. The old fashioned trams, lifts, and funiculars will catch your eye as they have been in operation for over 100 years! Just make sure you’ve looked into Radical Storage Lisbon so you don’t have to cram them onto the transport with you.

5.  Listen to some authentic fado music

Fado music is strong and heartfelt and is only in Portugal. You can hear the passion in the singers voices and it’s something you wouldn’t want to miss if you’re a music lover – especially a live music lover. There are some truly amazing street performances, and locals may even stop to sing and dance with the performers.

6.  Be careful of the tourist traps and inflated prices

Lisbon, just like everywhere else, does have some tourist traps and inflated prices. Lisbon can be a budget friendly location, but there are some restaurants and hotels that cost a lot more than the average one you find. It’s always best to check the prices and compare them with similar spots in the same neighbourhood.

Have you visited Lisbon? What was your favourite thing to see or do?

Mixing things up on my feed with this picture I to Mixing things up on my feed with this picture I took in San Francisco, was such an amazing trip and the Academy of Sciences there is so amazing! How lucky are we to be surrounded by such beauty? Been thinking a lot about the little moments of joy we can find during lockdown. For all the awful things we’ve had to endure during this, the little moments in nature, time spent in our bubbles and moments of kindness filling our feeds...these are the things you cling too when times are tough.
If you squint just right you can see Tower Bridge. If you squint just right you can see Tower Bridge. I’m doing that in real life right now, squinting and seeing future day trips, staycations and people watching outside cafes. It’s not easy to see but squint just right and they are there in the distance. 💕
Another little throw back to a lovely summers day. Another little throw back to a lovely summers day. I think we’ve all been feeling a bit fed up of being locked down recently, the news doesn’t help and even with 3 vaccines we have a long way to go. It’s definitely been a struggle for me, I’m quite a positive person but there are groundhog days in this that really test that positivity! Just really wanted to say I get how you’re feeling, this is totally crap and I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year, I honestly can’t believe this is real life sometimes! We have an end goal now though, however long it takes we know this will end so hold on to that and let’s just give this final lockdown (fingers crossed) the best chance it can have to flatten the curve and help save lives. Sending you all lots of love xx
It’s such a weird time right now, we have a vacc It’s such a weird time right now, we have a vaccine and a potentially second vaccine on the way here in the UK which is great news. But seeing the numbers rise and the awful death toll has definitely left us all a bit shaken. I’ve been looking back at old photos of days out and remembered this amazing day I had at @leedscastleuk for the festival of flowers. Can’t wait to just go off exploring when this is all over. Trying to keep that in mind when the little lockdown wobbles hit. Sending lots of love to you all, one day we’ll tell our grandkids about the year we spent inside! 💕
Throwing it back to when we could all travel and I Throwing it back to when we could all travel and I made myself a new friend 😊 if you’re struggling with the new lockdown and need some support my DM’s are always open 💕
How are we all doing? It looks like we are heading How are we all doing? It looks like we are heading for a second lockdown here in the UK. For me living in a vulnerable household and having PTSD, well it’s been a rocky year! I’m trying to focus on things that bring me joy and so I’ve been working on giving my blogging space a makeover! How are you holding up?
