The Happiness Project : Week One

So I spoke to you around 3 weeks ago about starting the happiness project (you can read that post here) and this is my first update with a mini review of sorts, about water. Yes not your standard ‘beauty blogger’ review and something that might seem a bit boring, but upping my water intake this past few weeks has had a massive effect on my mental health!

The Plan. So before starting my mini experiment, my daily fluid intake consisted of diet coke and coffee. That’s it. I know that’s awful and because I have PTSD the high caffeine intake is really bad for my nerves. I decided the ‘goal’ would be to drink 3 pints of water a day, easy for most people but I have never been a fan of plain water and obviously I have been in a bad routine for years so it was a bit of a challenge for me!

I made a plan to drink a pint of water in the morning, one around lunch time and then one before dinner and I did find for the first few days I actually had a pretty stonking headache, I think it was the caffeine withdrawal and I will admit I was struggling with that! I also found I broke out, a lot! My skin has never looked so rubbish and I took it as a sort of detox side effect. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stick to plain water everyday so when needed I decided to add lemon or some sugar free squash to take the edge off (that sounds bizarre but plain water definitely isn’t something I enjoy drinking!)

The Results. After around 10 days of sticking to the plan everything just started to click into place, my skin cleared up and I started to notice some serious changes to my mood too. I would even go as far as to say my life has changed because of this, how ridiculous does that sound? But seriously it has made such a difference to my life. I started to feel more alert during the day, no longer feeling that ‘getting through the day’ haze by lunchtime.

It meant I was able to really get things done, I started organising and planning things and by the end of the day I was actually tired. Now for someone who has suffered with insomnia for years and night terrors when I do manage to get a few hours sleep, this has been a revelation. I no longer get to bed a 5am and wake up in the afternoon, I am able to sleep at night and wake up really early! I feel positive too, my mood just seems more steady, I don’t have crazy highs and lows and I’m not as irritable anymore.

It’s been just over 3 weeks now, so almost a month and I will definitely be keeping this up, it’s made such a massive difference to my moods and it’s such a simple change to make, the added bonus of my skin being a lot clearer and my fine lines and dark circles all but disappearing is pretty amazing too!

I’ve already started on my second the happiness project post so I really hope you are enjoying the series so far, let me know what you think!

  1. Good for you for branching out from ‘not the norm’, I’m a fitness blogger and for me to hear people talking about happiness as part of health, that’s bloody brilliant.
Healthy and positivity are the same thing so the more we share how to be healthy (drinking water and tonnes of good foods) the more people are informed on how to be happy! x

Thanks for sharing this great post, I hope you continue with it.
    Merry Xmas! x
