Laura Mercier Silk Creme: Worth The Hype?

I actually don’t have a Laura Mercier counter near me and so I went by reviews online when picking a Silk Creme Foundation opting for the shade ‘peach ivory’. Now I know your probably thinking peach is a bit of a stupid colour for me when I have pink undertones to my skin but I actually wanted a foundation I could wear for nights out and for events that I would wear a fake tan too. I want to make this a bit of an in depth review because even though there are a ton of reviews online I haven’t seen many that go into detail about the product- especially in this shade.

This is a very thick foundation and it can be easy to apply too much which will definitely look and feel cakey and unattractive! I like to apply a pea size amount buffing it in with the Real Techniques buffing brush. Once I have the coverage I desire I then just quickly blend it in with my hands to ensure it looks as natural as possible. The finish is semi-matte which basically means it gives you a ‘your skin but better’ sort of glow. I find that when applied sparingly this can look amazingly natural with the option to add to it to increase the coverage and give a more matte finish. Again blending is the key here to avoid it looking to heavy.

My skin type is combination/sensitive which makes it a bit of nightmare to cater for. For example, I have an oily t-zone but I also get dry patches around my nose and chin. I know I know how lucky am I?! A lot of reviews say this foundation is great for combination skin but I personally found it did highlight my dry areas a lot more than my usual foundations do, I would therefore say if you have dry patches or very dry skin this may not be your best choice foundation wise. I found it kept my t-zone oil free all day and I didn’t use a setting powder over it so I was really impressed with that.

One of the reasons I steer clear of MAC bases it that they tend to oxidize after a few hours wear, this basically means the foundation starts to go darker and more orange toned, not what you want for a high end base product! Some talk online noted that the Silk Creme also does this, I can’t personally say I found this, the colour was a nice match for me when I have a light tan and I found it looked the same in natural light and after hours of wear. I’m not saying it doesn’t do it- but for me it was totally fine!

Yes I think I would. I will however be buying the shade Rose Ivory as we move into A/W as I would like to start wearing the foundation when I am not tanned. I would liken it to the Estee Lauder Doublewear in the sense that this is a thick, full coverage foundation and so you need to be double cleansing to ensure your not blocking your pores with it. For that reason too I wouldn’t say it was a great everyday foundation because the coverage is just too heavy for every day but as a ‘special occasion/big meeting/date night’ foundation this is definitely worth the hype.

I just wanted to say that if your considering purchasing this and it is something that would be an investment purchase (as in you have saved for it) then do go to a counter, get them to apply it and ask them for a sample to take away (bring a little pot with you so they can decant some if they don’t have mini samples!) This is a very expensive foundation and I personally don’t love it enough to class it a ‘holy grail’ foundation. That being said the coverage is excellent and the finish is really gorgeous for days when your skin isn’t feeling great or you have a big event!

Apply this with your fingers for a more natural finish and make sure to apply it over a primer for flawless coverage and lasting power.
