Maintenance Tips For Wooden Fences

21/05/2021 · charlotte evans · 0

Your fence being in good condition can make a massive difference to your back garden. Not only does it offer you the privacy we all want in our own homes, but when it is well maintained, your fence can also look stylish and elegant and really set off your garden in the best way. It pays, then, to look after it. Fences are not cheap to replace, and it’s far easier to do a little work in keeping your current one looking great than it is to pay out for a brand new one. Here are some of the ways you can maintain the look and condition of your wooden fence.

 Have The Right Equipment Handy

If you need to make quick repairs on your wooden garden fence to keep it looking good and to ensure your garden is safe and secure, it’s essential to have the right equipment handy. Otherwise, you’ll have to head off to the DIY shop to purchase what you need, and the job suddenly becomes costly and time-consuming. By having the equipment you might need in your shed or garage already, the job instead becomes something that you do right away rather than putting off.

Some of the items you might need include wood stain or bitumen paint, wood treatment, protective sheets, nails, spare boards, and a power washer. This is not an exhaustive list, but it will undoubtedly help you, at least in part.

Make Repairs Immediately

We’ve all seen gardens with dilapidated old fences barely standing upright in them. When you see them, they make the entire property look messy and uncared for, even if the house itself and the rest of the garden is fairly neat and tidy. So it’s crucial to make repairs on your fence quickly, so ensure your home doesn’t look uncared for in any way. This is especially true if you intend to put your house on the market, but even if you aren’t, having an attractive home is something to be proud of. Why would you want it any other way?

Another reason to make fixes right away is that by leaving them, they can become worse. You can fix one loose fence panel quickly, but if it is left, it can drag other boards down over time, and the repairs will take longer and cost more. To save time and money, immediate repairs are important.

Annual Treatments

Simply painting or varnishing your fence once might seem like enough, but it’s not. Fences are outside in all weathers, and that weather can have a seriously detrimental effect on the fence, meaning that, by the time spring comes around once more, a lot of wear and tear has occurred. If you leave the fence to its own devices, then it will start to deteriorate rapidly, and you may even have to install an entirely new fence much sooner than you expected.

If you treat your fence annually, using protective paint, as we mentioned above, you can keep it looking good for much longer, and it will be more able to stand up against the harsh winter weather that will be on its way.
