Topshop Velvet Lips

06/12/2013 · beauty · 0

I bought the new ‘velvet lips’ on a whim in my local Topshop. Part of the ‘The Damned’ collection they have another liquid lipstick hybrid this time with a velvety finish. I actually only saw 2 shades but I believe there is also a black shade (which is definitely not for the fainthearted!) The shades I have are Plush, a mauve/purple shade and Velveteen Ribbon, a bright red shade. I would say these are definitely tricky to apply, it takes a few goes to get the application right and if you don’t they are a bit messy but once you’ve applied them they set on the lips and then don’t budge at all! I couldn’t even remove them easily and needed to use bioderma to get them off which means once you’ve got the colour on you don’t need to worry about re applying! Here’s a mini review of the 2 shades:
Velveteen Ribbon is a bright red which in my opinion has a hint of brown to it, it makes it look quite ‘old hollywood’ and is very flattering on pale skintones. Application wise this one is the more opaque of the 2, it literally covers everything in one swipe which is good because it doesn’t work well when you have to go over an area twice- the product can get a bit patchy. I was so impressed with the formula though, if you apply it carefully the payoff is incredible and it doesn’t budge at all. This is definitely on my ‘top red lips’ list!
Plush is a mauve/purple and I actually thought it was the most wearable shade of the 2 which is surprising! It is a creamy purple not unlike the ‘straight ace’ lipstick from Topshop (which I reviewed here) This one isn’t quite as opaque as Velveteen Ribbon but it’s easier to apply and I found it went on evenly without any patches and then set on the lips with a velvety finish. I wore this all day and ate and drank without it budging at all, that has never happened to me before! A beautiful shade and definitely worth the investment.
All in all I was very impressed with the Velvet Lips, yes they are a little tricky to apply but once perfected the finish is amazing, the wear time incredible and the colours truly beautiful. The only thing you should note is that they are quite drying on the lips due to the velvet finish so you will need to have smooth lips (no dry skin!) and a slick of balm before application for the best finish. Here’s hoping Topshop extend the line out for S/S14!
You can purchase the Topshop Velvet Lips for £10 each here and in store!

I need Velveteen Ribbon like my life depends on it. Sold out online though which is annoying!

Excellent review and great photos. Both shades are lovely on you, but Velveteen red is stunning! Xx

These look lovely 🙂 Out of interest, did you blot your lips afterwards or not? Love your blog!

I really love the look of these but my lips are just too dry to pull off matte lips. 🙁 x

Every one of these is gorgeous! Thanks so much for posting. I think most of us don’t mind splurging on that extra special product–maybe a lipstick or a moisturizer… but what can really be frustrating are products that should be affordable but seem to break the bank no matter which brand you choose. Case in point: shaving razors. But we’re hoping to change all that. We’re a shaving company called Dorco and we think every girl should be able to afford high quality razors. In fact, our prices are 30-70% less than what you’re probably paying now. You have to see it for yourself to believe it: DorcoUSA.com. Thanks for posting, and remember ladies–Demand More for Less!

They look very nice on you but I think I wouldn’t feel comfortable with the matte texture…
