Winter can hit homes pretty hard so you need to prepare them beforehand. There can be many issues arising due to the colder months, there are things you can do to prevent them from happening.
Here are four problems you could face during winter:
Fireplaces
You might love the idea of cosying up around the fireplace. There is nothing nicer than a real fire warming you and your home. However, there are some risks and hazards associated with this. You need to make sure that you have your chimney regularly cleaned out and inspected to make sure it is safe and remains safe. You don’t want to light your fire to find out a few hours later you have a chimney fire on your hands.
You can call in chimney sweeps to come and do a yearly service and clean before you use it again. It is a good idea to do this mid-year so when winter rolls around it is ready for you.
Broken Boiler
A broken boiler can cause serious expensive problems for your household. You don’t want to wake up one day with no hot water or heating. To avoid this you should ensure you are regularly maintaining your boiler. Your boiler works very hard all year round but it works especially hard in the colder winter months. It potentially goes around 8/9 months without being overused, then all of the sudden it is expected to heat your whole house. Sometimes it just says no thank you, not today. When it does this you have problems, this calls for the boiler man.
It could be a quick fix or it could be something slightly more pricey like a brand new boiler being needed. An easy way to avoid this is to call in professionals to carry out a boiler service before the heating is needed.
Leaky Roof
In the colder months, there is more chance of rain and snow. This means that it sits on your roof causing damage you can’t see. Unfortunately, nobody checks their roof until there is a problem. If you have a poorly built roof your shingles can become dislodged leaving your roof prone to leaks. It may not be necessary but you should get your roof checked every winter to make sure that you are not at risk from leaks.
A leaky roof can cause more damage if left. For example, if you don’t sort a leak in your roof it can cause damp ceilings and walls leading to mould. Mould can be bad for your health especially if you already have pre-existing breathing problems such as asthma.
Cold breeze
Finally, your home may be old or poorly built, this means that there could be gaps that you don’t know about letting cold air in. you won’t notice this in the summer months as it can be quite pleasant when it is warm. As soon as winter hits you will know about it. A cold house can raise your energy usage and subsequently your energy bills. If you feel the cold then you will put your heating on raising costs. Unfortunately, if your house is letting the cold air in it is also letting the hot air out too quickly. One way to solve this is to invest in some new windows as this is usually where cold air gets in.
