Oily skin can be difficult. Oily skin does have the advantage of being less likely to develop fine lines and other signs of aging, this isn’t much comfort when you can’t get your makeup to stay on your face, and your forehead looks like an oil slick by the time you get to work. Here are some makeup tips for oily skin.
Get your skincare right
Your makeup can only be as good as the canvas that you’re putting it on. Exfoliate weekly, and properly cleanse your face morning and evening. It’s a myth that oily skins don’t need moisture. In fact, dryness can cause oily skin to produce more oil as it tries to hydrate. Make sure you’re using a moisturiser and suncare as well.
Wear waterproof mascara
Waterproof mascara can be annoying to remove, and if not you don’t put it on properly, it can make your eyelashes clump. However, oily skin can encourage your mascara to slide, and you can end up with it all around your eyes. Waterproof mascara will stay put. To avoid clumping, wiggle your mascara brush through your lashes as you apply it. If you really want budge-proof eye makeup, you could consider an eyeliner tattoo.
Use a mattifying primer
Before you put on your foundation, use a primer that will mattify the skin. A primer helps your foundation to grip onto the skin, keeping it in place for much longer.
Set your face with powder
After you’ve put your primer on, set it onto your face with a translucent setting powder. The powder will help to absorb any excess oil and set your primer onto the face. Putting the powder on before your foundation gives the foundation something else to stick to, helping it stay put. You can use the powder to reset your makeup throughout the day too if you think you’re starting to look shiny.
Look for oil-free foundations that are long wear
The last thing you need is more oil, so look for a long-wear foundation that is oil-free. A long-wear foundation is made with carefully chosen ingredients that help it to last longer. Get used to reading ingredient lists to help you to find foundations that don’t contain oil.
Avoid thick layers
It can be tempting to pack on a thick layer of concealer or foundation. Thick layers can quickly look cakey and will look awful if oil starts to make it separate. Whether you’re going for light or full coverage, apply makeup in thin layers. For fuller coverage, still apply light layers, just add on more of them. If you work like this, you can add a little more coverage where you need it, and leave it lighter where you don’t.
Use a setting spray
If you won’t be able to touch your makeup up throughout the day, set it with a setting spray before you leave the house. There are lots of great ones on the market that will hold your makeup in place.
