Keeping Your Home Safe When You Travel

14/07/2022 · charlotte evans · 0

Finally, and we can’t say this enough…finally it all seems to be coming to a point where the world is resembling something normal again – whatever that might mean to you and me is a difference of course, but we have access to a big world all over again, and we couldn’t be happier.

There are so many things to look forward to when one travels. The thrill of getting an unexpected upgrade at the airport, the corner suite at a fabulous inner-city hotel, and the endless thrill that comes with discovering new places. What we don’t look forward to so much, however, is coming home to a home without all the things we left behind. So while you’re out exploring fabulous cities like Paris, London, and New York, spare a thought for the things you love the most too.

Ah yes, nothing says “downer” like a house-breaking, and with crime rising in many major cities all over the world, combined with gangs and syndicates becoming ever more sophisticated in their operations this seems to be a problem that is going to get worse.

Luckily, we have some solid advice to help you secure your home using the latest technology and trends that places the security of your home quite literally in the palm of your hand.

FIRST THINGS, FIRST – GET THE PROFESSIONALS IN

This is not an area that you can excel in unless you happen to be from the industry. The thing about getting the “pros” in, is that they know to ask the questions you have not even thought of. Questions like, “what bars or pubs are close to your home”, “do your neighbours have access to your home, and if so where do they store your keys?”, “do you have a predictable schedule”? All of these issues and more combine to create a thorough understanding of your security situation.

Thieves and criminals rely on predictability. If you take the same route home every day, or you meet the same friends at the same after-work watering hole every day, you’re at risk – and you may not even know it.

So if you’ve been thinking about that long journey overseas, then it pays to invest in a home-based security system, installed and monitored by a professional.

MAKE THE MOST OF TECHNOLOGY (SAVE MONEY, AND TAKE CONTROL!)

Here’s the great news, you don’t have to spend a huge amount of money to secure your home when you’re away. Motion sensors, detectors, door and window alarms, fire alarms, flooding alerts, and motion sensors on your big ticket items can all be controlled and monitored from the comfort of your mobile device, anywhere in the world.

ARRANGE FOR GARDEN SERVICES

So this is the section that usually will get a few laughs when you suggest it to your friends. But if you have a garden or even a balcony garden, arrange for your family, friends or service to take care of your gardening as regularly as possible. Something that the more sophisticated gangs look out for is unkept front gardens and porches.

CALL TIME ON SOCIAL MEDIA

We’re all tempted to create the jealousy factor…but hold up on that until you return from your travels. Far too many of us have become far too comfortable sharing some highly personal information online. That shot of you throwing back a cocktail in the Caribbean, tells a burglar that you’re far away from home – and won’t be back for some time. This means that they have a lot of time to empty your home of its contents without raising suspicion from neighbours.

There are so many elements of home security to take into consideration, that it warrants getting a security company out to evaluate the situation that is most relevant to you. It’s an easy topic to get way too serious about especially as you’re getting ready for what should be the best time. Sadly, we live in a world full of unpredictable outcomes, and as inequality continues to rise, so do the desperate attempts of human beings to survive – this, in turn, becomes a pretty dangerous combination.

Take a look at these statistics here, that’ll give you something of a snapshot of what we’re experiencing.

Situations become even more complex if you’re living in a suburb that is in the outlying areas of inner city development. Statistics show that crime here can become particularly challenging as suburban families are seen as something of an easy target.

With all of these things taken into consideration, remember to not lock yourself out of your house or flat, but luckily for you – if you do…there are companies like Viclocks locksmiths.
