Are You Considering A Life Of Travel?

22/09/2021 · charlotte evans · 0

Seeing the world is something that a lot of people want to do, but the question is, is it achievable? Your situation is going to dictate what you can and can’t do, but there are many things you can do to make it more accessible to you. Of course, you have your home responsibilities to consider, and you’ll need to be able to plan around what you need to take care of, but it’s absolutely possible if you’re willing to make sacrifices. It’s unrealistic to expect to have everything at the same time; generally, you’ll need to pick one lifestyle or the other.

Extending your trips

Traveling can be quite expensive once everything has added up, and you’ll likely want to find ways to cut down that cost if you want your vacations to last longer. There’s only so much you can see over a week, but if you can somehow bring the price of your travel down significantly, it will give you a lot more time to see what you came to see. If you don’t cut the costs down, you’d be limiting your experience in exchange for things like comfort – not necessarily a bad thing, but it depends on your priorities.

The time you spend away from work is also important to consider, and you’ll want to make sure you have enough vacation days to get away for the time you need it. It can be hard to save your vacation days, especially if you had to spend them earlier on. If you want to get the most out of your travel, you have to make it a priority throughout the year.

Sorting out legal documents

The legal documentation you need might vary depending on where you want to go. Sometimes you’ll need more, sometimes all you’ll need is your passport. It’s important that you find out about this now, as the countries that you’re planning to go to might need a visa if you’re hoping to legally visit them. If you’re looking to travel within Europe, it wouldn’t hurt to look into ETIAS, as it could help you manage your expectations before you start to prepare. While you’re at it, you should consider whether or not you want to have multiple forms of these documents, so that you have a backup just in case. When you lose things in another country, it can be difficult to recover them – so being ready can be a life-saver.

Finding a place to stay

Everyone has their preference when it comes to how comfortable they want to be on their vacation, but it’s not always best to book yourself into a luxury hotel for every night that you spend away. Hotels are expensive, and you’re paying for everything that comes included with that. That means that if you’re not interested in all of the services that the hotel has to offer you, it won’t necessarily be the right option for you. If you want to save money on accommodation, then you might consider something like a hostel. You can save money, and you might not even lose out on the comfort of a hotel. Some hostels can offer you the same level of privacy, and your own restroom – it really depends on the hostel that you end up staying with.

Your luggage

If you do want to change up your accommodation to something like a hostel, you might consider changing how you pack instead. It’s hard to break out of your packing habits if you’re used to staying in hotels all of the time – but when your accommodation is only temporary, it can be a real pain to have all of your belongings with you when you’re on the move. Packing lightly is not only going to save you the stress of losing the things that belong to you, but you’re going to be a lot more comfortable when you’re not heavily lumbered by everything that you’ve brought with you. If you can fit everything into one or two bags that are easily carriable, then you’re good to go.

Figure out what you absolutely cannot do without, and then bring a few things on top of that to keep you comfortable. It might feel like you’re leaving a lot behind, but you won’t regret it when you’re free to move around without too much labor.

Being self sufficient

Like mentioned before, you can’t expect to be able to extend your vacation if you’re frequently spending on the comforts that are often expensive. You’ll want to make sure that you can look after yourself when possible. If you ever have the opportunity to cook your own meals, you should take it so that you can save money on those days – money saved that day will buy you a meal on another day. While it might not seem like much if you add up the cost for every meal that you have to buy when away, the number you get can be quite uncomfortable. It’s not only cooking but taking care of yourself, in general, is going to be important –  especially if you’re traveling on your own.

Picking your transportation

It’s not always avoidable, but you have to consider that getting a plane to the country of your choice isn’t always the cheapest option. There are often multiple ways you can travel there, by boat, coach, train, or plane. In general, if the destination is very far away – you’ll want to fly there; but you should consider your options if you’re going somewhere near. It’s going to take more time to reach it, but if it saves you a significant amount of money, that’s money that you can spend while you’re there, or put towards another vacation.

It can also help to observe the different costs of the tickets frequently to figure out when the best time to buy them throughout the year is. Sometimes the tickets will cost more when there’s a higher demand for them, so figuring out what you find more comfortable for you can save you a lot in the long run.

Do your research

Before you set out to your destination, taking the time to find out all about where you’re going can make a lot of difference. You can find out about what’s going on in the local area, what there is to see nearby, what you might need to bring with you as an extra. Doing some extra research can completely change how you experience your vacation. For example, neglecting to consider that you need a travel adaptor to charge your devices would be a big mistake – and you could find yourself without your phone or camera until you find a store that will sell you one. Generally, being without your phone in another country can be a daunting thought – so better to make sure you can charge it while you’re there.

Prepare a backup plan

Like with all things, you’re not guaranteed to have a successful trip, and no plan is guaranteed to go just as you thought it would. Making sure you have a backup plan in place to cover you if anything goes wrong means that you can go about your business somewhat stress-free. For example, bringing extra documentation, like mentioned earlier can make a lot of difference. Or planning to visit different areas just in case for some reason you’re not able to get to where you had planned to. Not having a backup plan can lead to a pretty disappointing trip if something goes wrong.
