Many people fantasise about designing and constructing their own home to their exact specifications. It is, however, a difficult dream to realise. Finding a piece of land is simple enough, although you can also consider whether you want to rebuild your home on your own property and having plans about how you want your home to look is simple enough, but doing it right is a different story. If you get them wrong, you might end up wasting a lot of money and time and ending up with a house of nightmares!
Small details matter
As they say, the devil is in the details, and this is never more true than when building a house from the ground up. You get fixated on the number of rooms you will have and the kind of granite you will use for your kitchen countertops, but you fail to think about where the power outlets will go. Let’s face it: not being able to charge your phone next to you is one of the most frustrating things in the world.
Think ahead
Lots of people people who build their own homes make the mistake of not considering their long-term goals. They may be childfree at the moment but plan to start a family in the future, or if they already have children, they may need more space. Their house has suddenly become unsuitable for family life. Those that are a little older should think about how convenient it is to get around the house if they begin to lose mobility – no one wants to be forced into selling a home they have built because they can no longer manage the stairs. When you are designing your own home, remember to think about the future and plan ahead for a few years as well as your current needs.
Be realistic with rooms
It is tempting to go all out and have fun rooms like a games room, theatre, sauna, or library when you have complete control over the design process. Of course, it will delight your visitors, and you will be using them all the time to start with. But, after the novelty wears off, how useful can they be? We discussed plans for the future in the previous point – what would be more beneficial in the future – a second bathroom or a light up dancefloor room?
Consider your bedroom placement
If you are building your own home, you are probably doing so in order to build the home of your dreams, one where you will always feel at ease. If you do not think about where your bedroom should be, you won’t be able to achieve that goal.
Your bedroom should ideally be situated as far away from any surrounding roads as possible so that you are not distracted by traffic noise when attempting to relax. You should also aim to put it in the far corners of the house, away from the bathroom and other bedrooms, so that you are not interrupted by the noise of your family or visitors.
